Takhat Shri Damdama Sahib is that spiritual center of sikh history where Dhan Dhan Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj spent a very significant period of his life. While struggling against the tyrannical rulers of the time, Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, in 1704 CE, left Anandpur Sahib, the city of blessings, while passing through Chamkaur Sahib, Machhiwara, Dina Kangar, Muktsar Sahib, Lakhi Jungle, Pakka-Pathrala and other places, reached this holy city in 1705 CE.
Here, Guru Ji untied his Kamar-Kassa and took rest on a high sand-dune surrounded by clusters of karir bushes. From this act, this place became famous as Damdama Sahib. Guru Ji stayed at this sacred place for more than around 15 months. At this place Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji checked the faith of his followers by asking them to stand in front of his gun to check its gun - shot.
The local choudhary Bhai Dalla Ji, along with his family, was blessed with the divine gift of Amrit, and named Bhai Dalla Singh. Here itself, Guru Ji rechanted Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and made it written by Shaheed Bhai Mani Singh Ji. At this same holy place, Guru Sahib made 48 Sikhs listen to the complete Katha of Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and blessed them with divine liberation after death.
Guru Sahib daily practicise the meanings of Shri Guru Granth Sahib to strengthen sikhi in there followers. Under the guidance of Guru Sahib Ji, Talwandi Sabo was bestowed the status of “Guru Ki Kashi,” where a new chapter of knowledge, Miri-Piri, and the principle of Shabad-Guru began. From this very place, Guru Ji prepared a new strategy for the Sikh Panth and elevated the intellectual consciousness of the Sikhs.
From Takht Shri Damdama Sahib itself, Guru Sahib Ji began the journey towards the South (Safar-e-Dasmesh 1706–1708), which was not merely a geographical movement, but a symbol of the propagation of Sikh faith, the restoration of justice, and the message of unity for humanity. Thus, Takht Shri Damdama Sahib became the new pillar of foundation for the Sikh history from where Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s southern journey commenced and a new direction for the future of sikh’s was determined.
Dhan Dhan Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Ji, from this very place, prepared copies of Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj and sent them to the main sikh shrines. This sacred land has also been blessed by the footsteps of the First Patshahi, the Ninth Patshahi, Mata Sahib Kaur Ji, and Mata Sundar Kaur Ji. At this very place, on the occasion of the Khalsa creation day, Vaisakhi, Guru Sahib Ji for the second time administered Amrit to lakhs of Singhs. In remembrance of this, every year the festival of Vaisakhi is especially celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm.
